Akira Sohma (草摩 晶, Sōma Akira, "Akira Soma") was the former head of the Sohma family. He was father to Akito Sohma and husband to Ren Sohma. Akira was the one who told Akito that she was the chosen child, a child born to be loved.
Akira has light pale skin with white short hair, grey eyes, and wore long white traditional kimeono clothes.
Akira was described as a beautifully kind person. However, he was also very melancholy because those around him did not understand his loneliness and only treated him as the head of the Sohma family. Ren was the first person to recognize his loneliness and fear of dying alone, and as such, he fell in love with her.
Although he had an earnest love for Akito, it is hinted that his parenting may have, in fact, been misguided. By repeatedly telling Akito that she was God and thus destined to unconditional love, he would ultimately cause Akito to develop her incredibly warped view that every member of the zodiac had to love her, despite her whims and repeated acts of either physical and/or emotional abuse, along with her emotional immaturity in recognizing the reasons why her actions were wrong in the first place.
Therefore, it can be assumed that Akira may have spoiled Akito excessively and had not taught her the difference between right and wrong, despite his otherwise good intentions. Although this may have been somewhat justified, given Akito's short age at the time and his possible need to be a more doting parental figure due to Ren's more-than-evident hostility, his failure to properly discipline his daughter ultimately left him unable to be a proper parent for Akito.
According to Kureno, his doctors said that he didn't have long to live. Akira was otherwise a lonely man, very quiet and kind, but was barely able to interact with people due to his terrible health.
However, the maid, Ren, managed to reach for him and become his companion, and eventually they married. When Akito was conceived, Ren threatened to abort the child if Akira did not consent to raising her as a boy. Akira, afraid that Ren would keep her promise, agreed.
Akira loved Akito as much as possible, while Ren rarely looked at her. Akira once asked Ren why she refused to hold her daughter, to which Ren replied that she, herself, was more important than Akito.
When Akira died of his illness, only Akito was present. He made an effort to comfort the little girl and tell her that she was special and beloved. However, his very last words were also a sad acknowledgment of how he and Ren could never truly reconcile. Ren came as soon as she could, but by that time, Akira had passed away. Ren shouted that she should have been there rather than Akito, whom she deemed a "worthless child". Both Ren's claims of the bond being fake and Akira's death may have caused Akito to become as twisted, controlling, and dependent as she is.
Akira was Ren's first, and only love. When she was younger, she was a maid in the Sohma house and basically Akira's maid. She would always be his maid, no matter what. But as time moved on, Ren and Akira fell deeply in love with each other, and he married her. Akira loved Ren more than anything. When they had their first child, a girl named Akito, Akira seemed to love Akito even more than Ren. This made Ren very jealous of Akito, thereby hating Akito. When Akira died, Ren became very depressed and hated Akito even more. She not only hated the fact that her one and only love was dead, but now the one to become the head of the family was Akito, the daughter she never wanted or loved.
He was a kind hearted and caring father to Akito. He loved his child more, than his wife. When he was dying, his wife did not see him. But only his child did.
